Why AI-Powered Assessments Might Be the Best Thing to Happen to EdTech

AI-assisted assessments offer a host of benefits for both educators and students. These video interviewing tools, powered by agentic AI, can address some long-standing pain points in education, by personalizing and automating parts of the assessment process.

Rapid, efficient grading

One of the most touted benefits of AI in assessment is the significant time savings. By automating scoring or first-pass evaluation, AI agents enable faster grading cycles. Routine quiz questions (and even complex responses with clear rubrics) can be evaluated in seconds by AI, allowing teachers to assign more frequent formative assessments without drowning in paperwork.

Teachers can thus spend less time on manual grading and more on interacting with students or refining curriculum.

For example, an AI might tell a student that they consistently mix up two grammar tenses, or that they skipped an important step in their problem-solving process, accompanied by suggestions to improve.

AI can help lighten that load by analyzing patterns at scale, enabling instructors to quickly identify individual strengths and areas for growth.

Armed with these insights, teachers can tailor their one-on-one coaching or adjust future lessons to address common gaps. The result is that students feel “seen” and supported as individuals.  

Greater student engagement and confidence

Personalized, interactive assessments tend to be more engaging for students than standard exams. Instead of facing a static list of questions (which might be too easy for some and too hard for others), learners get a challenge calibrated to their level – this keeps them in that “productive struggle” zone without veering into boredom or hopelessness.

Features like real-time hints, gamified elements, or an interactive dialog with an AI agent acting as a tutor or interviewer make the process feel more like a coaching session and less like a punitive test.

Students are more likely to stay motivated and put in effort when the assessment responds to them and provides encouragement or guidance.

For instance, a language student practicing with an AI tutor can build confidence over time as they notice their speaking skills improving through immediate feedback. Likewise, a shy student might find it less intimidating to first practice an oral presentation with an AI before delivering it to a human audience.

So, by lowering the stakes at the practice stage and giving continuous feedback, AI tools help students develop mastery and self-assurance. Engaged, confident learners ultimately perform better and take more ownership of their learning journey.

Consistency and fairness

AI systems apply the same criteria to everyone, which can improve fairness in scoring. There’s no risk of bias creeping in as each response is measured against the same rubric or model answers.

This consistency is particularly useful in large courses with multiple graders, where ensuring uniform standards is challenging. An AI agent can serve as a neutral second-opinion or even as the primary grader for objective parts of an exam.

Of course, teachers will still oversee grades, but with AI, they can be confident that each student was evaluated by the same yardstick. Additionally, agentic AI’s ability to highlight why it graded an answer a certain way (for example, pointing out which keywords were missing, or which pronunciation errors occurred) brings transparency to the grading process.

When students understand the rationale for their scores, it feels less arbitrary, and they can focus on learning from the feedback. All of this contributes to an assessment environment that students perceive as fairer and more supportive, which further boosts their engagement.

Enhanced academic integrity

As mentioned earlier, AI-based oral assessments and dynamic questioning techniques make it harder for students to game the system. In the age of easy internet access and AI text generators, traditional take-home exams or static quizzes are vulnerable to plagiarism and unauthorized assistance.

By contrast, an interactive assessment – like a live video Q&A with an AI or an adaptive quiz that changes per user – significantly reduces cheating opportunities. Students know they are each getting a unique set of questions or follow-ups, so sharing answers or relying on copied solutions becomes impractical.

Some AI proctoring tools can even flag suspicious behavior like switching the tabs on their computer or ensure the student is the one actually answering.

For educators and administrators worried about maintaining rigor and honesty, this is a huge plus. You can uphold high academic standards without resorting to draconian surveillance, simply by redesigning the assessment format with AI assistance.

In turn, genuine learning is more likely to take place, as students must engage with the material to succeed.
